The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities due to his slashing to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion to construct a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of numerous the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the gentle will succumb of cholera'
As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That is those of us – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Savior from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans could have minimal awareness about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is unquestionably not the narrative of an authoritative monarch emerging; conversely, a child comes into the world to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to teach the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your outer garment you should give him your sweater as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that Christ in biblical accounts requests a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity something of a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been inspired to witness the determined opposition to Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been great solace to help build the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the finest aspects of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
America is best defended, to put it differently, by relationship to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply feigning the worst about the nation and Christianity was nonexistent; it represents both modesty and faith, a blend that committed national faithful ought to accept.
